Don't Lose Your Money, Do Your Taxes Yourself!
Have you been working in Australia on a Work Holiday Visa? Learn how to get your taxes back FAST and without paying anyone! The laws have just changed, so this is the most up-to-date information.
Step 1: Payment Summary from Employers
Before anything else, you will need your PAYMENT SUMMARY from all of your employers. IMPORTANT: If you worked before January 1, 2017, you will be taxed at a different rate. This means that if you have a job that you worked before and after this period (November to February, for example) you will need SEPARATE payment summaries for each time period (one before January 1, 2017 and one after January 1, 2017). This is a problem because companies are not aware that they need to provide two different statements. Make sure to request this as soon as possible to get your taxes back faster.
Ok, so now you have all your payment summaries? Move on to step 2.
Step 2: Create a MYGOV Account
In order to file your taxes online, you will need a Mygov account. Go to my.gov.au and create a free account. You will need to provide information such as your Tax File Number (TFN), passport information and address. The account can be set up in only a few minutes.
Step 3: Connect to the ATO
Once your myGov account is up and running, you will need to connect to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Unfortunately, people on a Work Holiday Visa "don't have enough information to verify their identity." This means that you will have to call the ATO. They can be reached at: 13 28 61.
When you call, you'll need your TFN and passport at hand. Explain that you have a myGov account that won't connect to the ATO because you are a Work Holiday Maker.
STEP 4: Do Your Taxes!
Once you have been successfully linked to the ATO, you can begin to file your taxes. The process is quite simple and doesn't take too long. I recommend checking the box: "Permanent Resident for Tax Purposes." You can save your progress and go back to it at any time.
Once you have completed the forms, simply submit! Work Holiday Makers' tax is double checked automatically, so don't worry about any mistakes you might have. If they find a mistake, they will call you to fix it.
If everything is correct, you can expect your refund to come in a few days.
You have until the end of October to file your taxes. Good luck and enjoy your refund!
