Is the "Chinese GoPro" worth it?
So before going to Thailand, we decided to buy an action camera. We weren't sure how much we'd use it on our travels, so we bought a Yi Action Camera for $70 USD. This camera is like a Chinese version of a Go Pro. Along with the camera, we purchased accessories such as a selfie stick, headstrap, and chest strap. We ended up loving our little camera, and used it every day in Thailand from Bangkok, to the temples, to Chiang Mai...where we used it in the water and mud when we visited an elephant sanctuary.
For it's price, the camera takes decent photos and videos and we really liked it. The "waterproof case" however: NOT WATERPROOF. A bit of muddy water got into our case somehow and that's when the camera started to have issues. I know some people haven't had issues with their Yi Action cameras or cases, so I'm going to make an educated guess that our case was defective. After the elephant visit, we tried to dry the case and camera as well as we could.
The first problem that we noticed is that the blue light was now red, almost all of the time. After Chiang Mai, we made our way to the Thai island Koh Samui. Our camera seemed to be doing ok, so we took it for a swim.
At this point, there was a bit of water collecting at the bottom of the "waterproof" case after each snorkeling session. We took the case under the water sans camera and sure enough, bubbles were escaping. At first, only a little water would enter the case, but eventually the case, and camera were shot. RIP Yi Action Camera.
Final Thoughts The camera itself was great, especially for the small price tag when compared with a Go Pro. If you are just starting out, this is a great starter camera. Obviously, I would recommend to invest in a better waterproof case. Also, make sure to test it before you hit the beach!
